The scientific literature records it plainly: from being one of the largest importers of lemongrass essential oil a few years back, India has become one of the largest exporters in the world — credited to the CSIR Aroma Mission led by CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow. India now produces around 1,000 tonnes of lemongrass essential oil annually, exporting 300–400 tonnes to the United States, England, Germany, Australia and Japan.
The global lemongrass oil market was estimated at around USD 56.3 million in 2024, growing at roughly 9.7% a year to 2034, driven by the shift away from synthetic fragrance toward naturally derived ingredients.
This is the cheapest entry in our entire report series. The crop grows on cultivable wastelands and drought-prone land — sandy, drier soils actually give more oil and higher citral than fertile ones. It cuts three to five times a year. The spent grass fuels its own still. Three things this report tells you that a general essential oil guide will not
Recovery is your entire economics — and the published range is enormous. Indian sources report 0.29% on fresh weight, 0.5–0.8%, and a commercial 0.6%. At 0.6%, 80 tonnes of herb gives 480 kg of oil. At 0.29%, the same biomass gives 232 kg. Same land, same labour, same year.
Your value compound is a listed fragrance allergen. Citral gives lemongrass oil all its value and is an EU-listed fragrance allergen, as are geraniol and citronellol alongside it. Your cosmetic customers cannot label their products without your compositional data. That is not a barrier — it is your opening.
Lead with the chromatogram, not the price. Buyers describe their problems as lot-to-lot drift, supplier opacity and authenticity risk, with cost of quality running 6–12%. A GC-MS profile costs ₹4,000–20,000 per lot. No other action in this series has that ratio.
